Obituary

Robert S. “Rookie” Wojtkowski, 75 years of age, of Hopewell Township. sadly passed away on August 13, 2023.  Rookie was born February 5, 1948.

He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and his Master of Education degree from Slippery Rock University in 1976.

Rookie was a beloved history teacher at Hopewell Area School District for 39 years, retiring in 2009.  He served as the department chair for over 30 years and was instrumental in developing the high school’s psychology program.

Endlessly dedicated to his family and close friends, Rookie’s impact of his life’s work as an educator will continue through many generations.

He was most proud of his accomplishments as a teacher where his guidance and mentorship will forever be cherished by his former students. Rookie’s love of history and passion for photography and travel was evident in his numerous educational tours with not only his students but also his foreign exchange students. He instilled the appreciation of other cultures and the arts.

One of Rookie’s hobbies was participating in the local bowling league where he was the emcee of the annual bowling banquet.  Those who attended enjoyed an evening of incredible laughter.  Rookie’s sense of humor and wit was evident as he knew how to deliver a good joke and entertain the crowd.

He will be remembered as a loyal Pittsburgh sports fan and hosted many of his own “Mike Ditka Golf Outing” backyard celebrations overlooking the sixth fairway at The Club at Shadow Lakes.  Many local golfers and celebrities stopped in for some food and libations which was the highlight of the day.  Even Mike enjoyed stopping by to say hello.

Rookie was a generous and kind person who spread joy and happiness wherever he went.  If you were his friend, you were his friend for life.  He rarely missed a birthday or anniversary which was his way of showing your importance to him and, if you were ever in Hall’s Restaurant, he probably bought you a drink.  He will be missed by everyone in his life who loved him.

Rookie was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Ruby Wojtkowski.  He is survived by his beloved twin sister, Roberta “Bert” Wojtkowski of Reston, Virginia. Their relationship was very close, demonstrating the bond of being a twin.  He is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews both in the United States and abroad.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, from 4-8 p.m. at Darroch Cremation and Funeral Tributes, Inc., 2640 Mill Street, Aliquippa.  A private service will take place at a later date.
