Lt. Col. Howard W. VanScoy, 93, of Center Twp., passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
He was born on March 21, 1926 in West Milford, WV, a son of the late Howard and Mary (Chadwell) VanScoy, Sr. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Aliquippa. He graduated from Salem College, BS Bus 1949, and the State University of Iowa, 1962, Master Arts Degree, Health Care Administration. Navy School of Hospital Administration, 1955. He served in the U.S. Army, Honorably Discharged in 1946, Sgt.. He was called to Active Duty as 2nd Lt. USAF (MSC), January 1951 and served in a number of Command and Staff positions during his 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force. He retired Lt. Col. (MSC), Command Headquarters AF Reserve, Warner Robins AB, Warner Robins,GA,. June 1970, where he served as Executive Officer of Command Surgeon’s Office. He received the Meritorious Service Medal, other decorations include AF Commendation Medal w/OLF, Chief Medical Service Corp. Badge. After retirement from the Air Force, he served as President of Deconess Hospital, Cleveland, OH; CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove, IL; and CEO of Aliquippa Hospital, where he retired in 1989. He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis M. VanScoy; a daughter, Karen Cooper; and two brothers.
He is survived by three children, Cynthia (George) Spearman; Denice V. (Ross) Mills; Michael W. (Debbie Giovinco) VanScoy; a son-in-law, Randy Cooper; seven grandchildren, Michelle Spearman; Marie Cooper; Julie (Dan) Jolliff; MaryLynn Mills; Ashley (Luke) Robertson; Victoria (Younes) Chajai; and Rebecca VanScoy (Younes Ahlafi); and five great grandchildren, Riley Robertson; Evelyn Jolliff; Zoe Jolliff; Amir Chajai; and Sophia Ahlafi.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm in Darroch Cremation and Funeral Tributes, Inc. 2640 Mill Street, Aliquippa www.darrochfuneralhome.com
Additional visitation will be on Thursday from 10am until the time of Funeral Service at 11am in the First United Methodist Church of Aliquippa, 2816 Brodhead Road, Aliquippa.
Interment will take place in the Harrisville Odd Fellows Cemetery, Harrisville, WV.
The Beaver County Special Unit will meet at the church on Thursday at 11:45am to conduct full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
