Welcome to the memorial page for

Patricia J. Bauder

June 14, 1925 ~ March 19, 2015 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Patricia J. Bauder, who tended the sick, her family and her flower beds for nearly 90 years, died in her sleep on Thursday, March 19, 2015.

Born June 14, 1925, a daughter of Clyde and Mary Chewning, she grew up in Rochester during the Great Depression. She said her family was poor, but she never knew it.

The baby of the family, she graduated from Rochester High School in 1943 and the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. During World War II she served with the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, which provided nursing care in civilian and military hospitals and public clinics.

She worked for more than 40 years as a scrub nurse in operating rooms at Rochester General Hospital and Aliquippa Community Hospital.

In 1949 she married Elmer L. Bauder. Together they raised four sons.

Her husband and boys lovingly called her “Maw;” her brothers and sister called her “Patty.”

She could whip up a cherry pie or patch a skinned knee in a moment’s notice and did both often in her younger days. She always enjoyed working around her house, especially outside in her flower gardens.

Bugs didn’t bother her, but she couldn’t stand snakes.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kimberly of Hopewell Township; James and Karen of Hopewell; and William Bauder and Julie Jackson of Tahoma, Calif. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jake and Emily Bauder of Hopewell and Charles Bauder of Tahoma.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, John Christopher Bauder; two brothers, Ernest and Charles Chewning; and a sister, Voneda Laughlin.

Friends and family will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Darroch Memorial Chapel, 2640 Mill St., Aliquippa. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ohio United Presbyterian Church, 1236 Longvue Ave., Hopewell.

The boys extend heartfelt gratitude to Brenda Brady and Lisa Mateer, who hung out with Pat when she needed it most.
